South Dakota Children's Book Awards

In addition to its other mentions and accolades, The Day The Universe Exploded My Head has been nominated for a Prairie Bloom Children’s Book Award by the South Dakota Library Association. This is a very special honor, as the awards are decided by readers themselves. For Universe, that means the 2nd and 3rd graders of South Dakota have singled out our book, and love it as much as we do. If you’d like to see all of the other wonderful books for all grades, nominated for this year’s awards, check out the South Dakota Librarian Association website.

UNIVERSE is a Kirkus Best Book of the Year!

My head is officially exploding over the news that the ultra-discerning reviewers at Kirkus have named THE DAY THE UNIVERSE EXPLODED MY HEAD, by Allan Wolf and me a Best Poetry Picture Book of 2019!

”Poems about stars, planets, moons, and other astronomical wonders, accompanied by stylish anthropomorphic illustrations…A giddy ride through our stellar neighborhood and beyond.”

You can read all about it, and see the other wonderful books on the list. If with all of this news you find yourself suffering from FOMOoEH (Fear of Missing Out on Exploding Heads), you can procure a copy of the book here. I for one am over the moon!

★ Another Star for THE DAY THE UNIVERSE EXPLODED MY HEAD

The reviews are coming in and I am thanking my lucky stars! On the heels of our first starred review from Kirkus, THE DAY THE UNIVERSE EXPLODED MY HEAD, by Allan Wolf and me has earned a second star, this time from Booklist…

“A complete package: a collection of clever, whimsical poems and striking, full-page illustrations. Visually compelling, this will capture and hold the attention of young stargazers.”

The book was art-directed by the wonderful Lisa Rudden at Candlewick Press, who set me loose in the universe to draw and paint myself in and out of a black hole or two. (It was much more fun than it sounds!) And all-the-while, Allan’s poems made me laugh out loud.

If you’d like a sneak peek at some of the art, visit the book section on my site. And last, I spent most of my holiday break working on the book trailer which we’ll be launching soon. Let the countdown begin! (Wow…the puns in this post are astronomical!)

THE DAY THE UNIVERSE EXPLODED MY HEAD blasts off on March 5th, but if you’d like to pre-order a copy for yourself or a future astronaut you know, click here.
